Various communities from across Manipur held a meeting to discuss issues related to the sacred Koubru and Thangjing hill ranges, with the Committee for the Protection and Preservation of the Historical Rights of Koubru and Thangjing (CPPKT) Hill Ranges stating that a people’s convention will be organised on February 3.
According to a statement issued by the Committee for the Protection and Preservation of the Historical Rights of Koubru and Thangjing Hill Ranges, a joint meeting was held on January 22, 2026, at around 12:10 pm at the office of Keke Moirang Kangleirol Kanba Lup in Moirang. The meeting was attended by representatives of various communities and civil society organisations.
The meeting saw participation from leaders and representatives of Kabui, Kom, Chiru, Purum and Chothe communities, along with members of Moirangi Ibudhou Thangjing Phamnaiba Cheirap Loishang and Thangjing Seva Mandal. Several civil society organisations, women’s groups, youth clubs and cultural bodies from Moirang and surrounding areas also took part in the deliberations.
The meeting was presided over by Sapamcha Jadumani, President of the Federation of Haomee, while Leichonbam Gopal, Chairman of Salai Kanba Lup, acted as moderator.
During the discussions, it was stated that Koubru and Thangjing are not sacred sites of the Meetei community alone but are sacred to all indigenous communities living across the hills and valleys. The meeting expressed concern over claims and actions by certain groups attempting to portray these sacred sites as belonging exclusively to one community, and resolved that such narratives should be collectively opposed.
The participants also resolved that Koubru and Thangjing should be recognised and preserved as shared sacred and historical sites of the indigenous people of Manipur. It was stated that efforts to misrepresent or alter the historical and cultural significance of these sites would be resisted through democratic means.
The meeting further decided to constitute the office bearers of the Committee for the Protection and Preservation of the Historical Rights of Koubru and Thangjing Hill Ranges. Sapamcha Jadumani was appointed as President, Leichonbam Gopal as Vice-President, Hemamcha Sheityajit as General Secretary, Laiphrakpam Boy as Assistant Secretary, Kiyam Sony Devi as Secretary of the Women’s Wing, and Kumam Jimika Devi as Assistant Secretary of the Women’s Wing. Representatives from Thangjing-related religious bodies, Indigenous Mother’s Association of Haomee, and other senior leaders were appointed as advisors, while 20 executive members were selected from participating organisations.
The meeting also resolved to organise a people’s convention on February 3 at the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, starting at 11:00 am. The committee appealed to community leaders, civil society organisations and concerned citizens to participate actively in the convention to protect and preserve the historical, cultural and religious significance of Koubru and Thangjing hill ranges.
