Imphal, Feb 22:

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called upon lawmakers representing the Meitei, Naga, and Meitei Pangal communities to take a decisive stance in protecting the integrity of Manipur and putting an end to the persisting violence. As the upcoming assembly session is scheduled for February 28, 2024, COCOMI emphasizes the urgent need for a firm decision during this crucial legislative gathering to address the pressing issues affecting the state’s stability and security.
Addressing a press conference at its office, COCOMI Coordinator Thokchom Somendro expressed his disappointment with the lawmakers’ failure to reach a consensus on safeguarding Manipur from illegal immigrants. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Since they did not come to a decision, even the volunteer group Arambai Tenggol had called the lawmakers to take a firm decision at the Kangla. It was unfortunate on the part of lawmakers.” Somendro highlighted the gravity of the issue, urging swift and decisive action to address the concerns raised by COCOMI and other concerned groups.
“We urged the lawmakers to take a firm decision in the upcoming assembly session to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and to take stringent action against illegal immigrants,” Somendro continued. “Additionally, we urged the lawmakers to make a decision regarding the suspension of operations with Kuki militants. Furthermore, we call upon the government to formalize and communicate the decisions made during the assembly session to the central authorities,” he added, underscoring the importance of swift and decisive legislative action to address the critical issues facing Manipur.
“The recent arson targeting the Churachandpur DC office, Superintendent of Police quarters, and police station, coupled with threats issued by the ITLF against the DC and SP, raises grave concerns,” he continued. “If the SP and DC were to be harmed, will the Government of India remain passive spectators? Despite our urgent appeals, the government has yet to make any arrests in connection with the Churachandpur incident,” Somendro lamented. “Hence, we urge both the Government of India and the Manipur state government to swiftly apprehend all those involved, demonstrating the presence of law and order in Manipur.”
