Imphal, Dec 17:

The COCOMI Student Wing has demanded the immediate termination of police personnel allegedly involved in the killing of a village volunteer, Laishram Prem, a 10th-grade student of Nimaichand Keinya High School. Addressing the media, Chungkham Bidyananda, Media Coordinator of COCOMI Student Wing, stated that Laishram Prem, a resident of Thoubal Khunou, was captured and killed by police personnel on December 14.
“This incident marks the resurgence of fake encounters, which were once rampant in the state. On the same day, six other village volunteers were arrested,” Chungkham Bidyananda claimed during the press meet.
Expressing grave concerns over the incident, Chungkham Bidyananda highlighted the role of village volunteers in safeguarding communities during ongoing crises. “Village volunteers are the ones who have taken responsibility to defend the people because the state machinery has failed to do so. The government’s primary duty is to protect its citizens, yet they have failed miserably. If the police can target those protecting villages, then who will defend the people?” he questioned.
The student wing has further demanded the immediate release of all six arrested village volunteers, warning that the situation could spiral into further unrest.
“In the attacks by Kuki militants, everyone knows who has been defending the people. It is the village volunteers and not the police. If the police can show bravery in killing a village volunteer, they should also show the same courage in defending people from Kuki narco-terrorists. They should demonstrate the same bravery in the hills as well, but they are not doing so, and everyone knows this,” Chungkham Bidyananda said.
