Imphal, Feb 5:
COCOMI Farmers’ Wing has brought attention to the Agriculture Department, urging them to take immediate initiatives for the widespread cultivation of angangphou, also known as early paddy, in Manipur. This appeal is driven by the current challenging circumstances in the region, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict with Kuki-Zo militants.
In a recent statement signed by Thoiba Meetei, Convenor of COCOMI Farmers’ Wing, it is highlighted that the prices of essential items have soared due to the conflict, as the militants are imposing taxes on supplies passing through NH 2. This economic crisis has resulted in widespread unemployment, affecting the livelihoods of many individuals in Manipur. Moreover, the transportation restrictions imposed by the militants have hindered access to medical treatments outside Manipur for those unable to afford air travel. The statement emphasizes the impact of the divide and rule policy of the central government, contributing to the current dire conditions faced by the people in Manipur.
COCOMI Farmers’ Wing asserts that it is high time for the region to reduce dependence on external sources for essential needs, particularly food. With this perspective, the organization has appealed to the Agriculture Department and other relevant authorities to take proactive measures to encourage the widespread planting of angangphou. The statement calls for the Agriculture Department to facilitate the early angangphou cultivation initiative by providing timely and sufficient seeds and fertilizers to the cultivators. Additionally, it urges the department to prioritize the repair of dams and canals to ensure proper water supply to the paddy fields, promoting successful cultivation.
