COCOMI appeals to National Commission for Women for Support

IT News,
Imphal, July 27:

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has reached out to the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, India, urging immediate initiatives to aid the women of conflict-stricken Manipur. In a letter dated July 26, 2024, COCOMI highlighted the plight of over 60,000 internally displaced persons, with more than half being women and children, following the violence that erupted on May 3.
COCOMI highlighted the severe privacy issues faced by women and children in relief camps, which are affecting their psychological health and educational opportunities. The absence of private spaces is particularly detrimental to adolescent girls and housewives. Additionally, the displaced women have lost their workplaces and are without income, relying solely on government relief and civilian generosity. This economic instability puts adolescent girls at risk of losing their morality and becoming socially marginalized.
In their appeal, COCOMI requested the establishment of a dedicated monitoring cell within the National Commission to monitor and gather data on the conditions of women victims in Manipur, ensuring immediate and effective remedial actions. They also urged the creation of special economic centers in collaboration with government bodies and corporate funding to provide respectable work opportunities for women victims. Furthermore, COCOMI recommended the establishment of hostels for girls affected by the violence, allowing them to continue their education in a safe environment. They also called for the engagement of educational trusts to sponsor female victims, facilitating their enrollment in comprehensive study programs. Finally, they advocated for the development and implementation of specific policies and programs aimed at the proper rehabilitation of women affected by the violence in Manipur.
COCOMI expressed gratitude for the Chairperson’s previous landmark initiatives, such as the women helpline, one-stop centers, and the ‘Digital Shakti’ campaign, which have significantly empowered women across India. They hope for similar impactful measures to support the women of Manipur during this crisis.
