Imphal, Jan 21:

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh dismissed the recent directive by Hill Tribal Council’s (HTC) to ban the Meitei Mayek script in schools, stressing that the state is run by the government, not by any organization. His comments were made in response to the Hill Tribal Council’s (HTC) education department’s recent order to exclude Manipuri/Meitei Mayek from the school syllabus in Moreh town for the 2025-2026 academic year. The HTC’s directive proposed that students opt for alternative Modern Indian Languages such as Hindi, English, Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, or Gangte.
“There are various organizations, including the Hill Tribal Council etc.. we don’t care, while we take seriously those recognized organizations. The state is governed by the government, not by any individual or group,” N Biren Singh said at the 54th Statehood Day celebration at 1st Bn Manipur Rifles Ground.
