Peace Cyclist and social activist Malem Thongam has strongly criticised Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh for placing a floral wreath on a flag associated with the demand for a Separate Administration during the funeral of former Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte in Churachandpur.
In a statement, Malem alleged that the flag has long been used by Kuki militant groups and several Kuki civil society organisations to symbolise their demand for a Separate Administration outside Manipur. He claimed that the Chief Minister’s act conveyed a message that the BJP-led government was endorsing or legitimising the separatist demand.
Describing the gesture as an affront to the unity and territorial integrity of the state, Malem said it had deeply hurt the sentiments of people committed to preserving Manipur’s territorial integrity. He held the Chief Minister directly responsible for what he termed a politically insensitive act.
The activist also questioned the government’s claims of normalcy, pointing out that the Chief Minister travelled to Churachandpur by helicopter instead of using the highway. According to him, the decision exposed the government’s inability to ensure safe and unhindered movement of the public across the state.
Malem further urged the government to stop what he described as baseless allegations against members of Arambai Tenggol, Village Volunteers and other youths, and demanded the unconditional release of those who had been detained.
