The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has strongly condemned the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by security forces during a rally demanding justice for six Liangmai civilians allegedly abducted and killed at Leilon Vaiphei and two others killed at Langka Liangmei village.
In a statement, AMUCO Secretary (Publicity) Heisnam Phoren Mangang said the Joint Tribes Council, Foothills Naga Coordination Committee and Native People’s Committee organised the rally from Kanglatombi to Namdilong to demand the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings.
AMUCO alleged that security forces fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets when the rallyists confronted them, injuring several protesters.
It identified the injured as P. Asenbou, 44, of Makhan; Chunwibou, 17, of MR; Wilubou Marenmei, 33, of Khukhu Naga village; and Wikhonliu, 36. The organisation urged doctors at JNIMS to provide proper care to those injured.
AMUCO said the demand for justice for the slain civilians was legitimate and condemned the use of force against protesters. It warned that excessive use of force and policies perceived as discriminatory could further deepen divisions and instability in the State.
The organisation urged the government to maintain an impartial approach and treat all communities equally, asserting that suppressing public voices through force would undermine democratic values.
It appealed to the authorities to respect the people’s right to peacefully express their grievances and ensure justice for the victims.
