Imphal, Feb 3:
Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Okram Ibobi, has urged the Governor of Manipur, AK Bhalla, who is also the constitutional head of the state, to advise Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to refrain from intimidating members of the state assembly.
A delegation of Opposition Congress MLAs, led by Ibobi, met the Governor today and raised concerns over the Chief Minister’s remarks at Thambal Sanglen during the observance of the 75th Constitution Day. The Chief Minister had reportedly stated that any MLA who moves a no-confidence motion in the upcoming state assembly session would face dire consequences from the public.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Ibobi condemned the statement, calling it an act of intimidation against the members of the legislative assembly. He pointed out that moving a no-confidence motion is a democratic right of the opposition, and it is solely up to them whether or not to exercise it.
The Manipur Assembly session has been scheduled for February 10, with a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting set to take place at 2 PM today. Ibobi further asserted that such remarks by the Chief Minister were unconstitutional and should not be made by the leader of the House. The Congress has urged the Governor to take necessary steps to ensure that the democratic rights of MLAs are not undermined.
