There seems to be no dearth of clashes between the armed Kuki groups and the Meitei village defenders since the outbreak of the violence in Manipur even though the government has claimed restoration of normalcy and improvement of law and order system. Even though many towns and commercial areas have restored normal functioning with traffic crowding at many places, life in the periphery areas between Kangpokpi district, Imphal East and Imphal West district and also between the Churachandpur – Bishnupur and Kakching district areas are spending sleepless night preparing to face the armed militants as firing towards Meitei villages in these areas continues.
At around 10 am today morning, a group of heavily armed Kuki militants reportedly fired some rounds of gunshots towards Meitei inhabited areas near Haraothel side in Imphal West district. In retaliation, the already angry village guards of the Meitei community fired toward the militants and even chased them. The gunfight took place for hours between the village guard of the Meitei people and the armed Kuki people near Leilon, Konshal, and Kharam vaiphei villages areas in Kangpokpi district. In the gunfight, two armed militants belonging to the Kuki people were reportedly killed.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), the Kuk organization spearheading the war against the Meitei people and the Government of Manipur have confirmed the report of the two deaths.
The two deceased persons are identified by the CoTU as Henminlen Vaiphei S/O Luntinlal Vaiphei of Leimakhong Mission Veng and Thangminlun Hangsing S/O Lunkhongam Hangsing of Khunkho Village. Upon confirmation of the death of two Kuki people the CoTU in an emergency meeting had called a total shutdown in Kangpokpi district.
After the report of the gunfight in the morning a large team of security personnel including the paramilitary forces rushed to the site and conducted a search operation.
Interestingly after the CoTU declared an emergency shutdown in Kangpokpi district, another group of armed Kuki groups reportedly started attacking Meitei villagers at the Koutruk side. Report reaching here at this hour (3.00 pm) said that gunfight between the Meitei Village defenders and the armed Kuki people supported by militants under suspension of operation continues till now. Security forces have reportedly rushed to the site to put the situation under control.
