LAMKA, Jan. 6: Barely a week after the district administration issued an order for compulsory vaccination of all pet animals particularly dogs in Churachandpur following suspected cases of rabies, there has been a record surge in the number of dog-bite cases with over 100 people seeking treatment since from November last, said Medical officer of Churachandpur District Hospital.
Dr. G Thangchinkhup, CMO of the District Hospital said that 45 such cases were registered at the hospital during November-December 2014. From January to till date , 23 dog-bite cases have been treated by the hospital with 3 cases on January 1, eight cases each on January 2 and 3, and four cases on January 4, he added.
Lunminthang Haokip, Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur has claimed that the Veterinary and Medical Departments have been following the order issued on December 30.The CMO has been apprised about the
situation and he has been following up the cases, Lunminthang said.
However, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Thangchinkhup said there was no clinical confirmation of rabies yet in the district but nevertheless acknowledged the reported cases of death due to dog-bite. The Medical
Department has plans to conduct awareness programme in this regard on Friday.
