Chief Minister N. Biren Singh today described Shumang Leela (Courtyard Play) as the most influential form of media while speaking at the award presentation function of the 21st Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei 2024-2025. The event, organized by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council, was held at Th. Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound.
Highlighting the critical role of this traditional performing art, the Chief Minister said that Shumang Leela has been instrumental in raising awareness among the people of Manipur, especially during challenging times. He lauded Shumang Leela artists for their efforts in addressing core issues of the ongoing crisis in the state and fostering understanding among the public.
Internationally acclaimed theater director and playwright Ratan Thiyam, who was also present at the event, emphasized the need for a collaborative and integrated approach to preserving Manipur’s rich cultural heritage. He acknowledged the government’s recent efforts toward cultural development but stressed that artists require more than pensions to survive. According to him, cultural integration and tourism play vital roles in sustaining and promoting the arts.
Ratan Thiyam also advocated for the creation of a world-class yet unique cultural complex in Manipur to nurture its artistic legacy. He highlighted the importance of promoting cultural identity to bridge the divisions among communities in the state, noting that unity can only be achieved through the essence of oneness in diverse cultural expressions.
He further pointed out that the government currently recognizes 35 art forms, adding that the integration of these art forms could contribute significantly to fostering unity.
During the occasion, various individuals who have made sacrifices for the cause of Shumang Leela were honored, celebrating their contributions to preserving this traditional art form.
