Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam’s Cachar district, signalling an intensified outreach by the party in the Barak Valley region.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by A. Sharda Devi and several MLAs from Manipur, had travelled by road via National Highway-37 to Jiribam on Saturday. During the visit, a multi-community meeting was held as part of efforts aimed at fostering reconciliation nearly three years after the Manipur violence of May 3, 2023.
Continuing his engagements, Yumnam Khemchand Singh campaigned in support of BJP candidate Rajdeep Goala, who is contesting from the Udarbond Assembly constituency.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister criticised the previous Indian National Congress government, alleging that Manipur had been neglected and that development across the Northeast had lagged during its tenure. He stated that the situation had changed following the BJP’s rise to power, asserting that the region had since witnessed faster development.
He also highlighted improvements in road connectivity between the Barak Valley and Manipur, stating that enhanced infrastructure is strengthening economic and social ties between the two regions.
Party workers indicated that the campaign’s focus on Manipuri-origin voters in Cachar formed part of a targeted strategy to consolidate support in areas with longstanding cultural and historical links to Manipur.
