Chandel observes International Day of Food Loss and Waste

The “International Day of Food Loss and Waste” was observed today at Monsang Pantha, Chandel district, alongside the Sewa Parv programme. The event was attended by the village chief Ng. Vintson Monsang, local villagers, and staff of the Forest Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO Chandel, highlighted the global concern of food wastage. “September 29 is observed worldwide to reinforce the message against food wastage and promote food conservation. In today’s world population of 2.33 billion, one out of every 11 people faces hunger. At the same time, an individual wastes an average of 74 kilograms of food globally. This is about 60 per cent of the total food of every household. The wastage of prepared food also contributes to 10 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions,” he said.
Dr. Munal further added that Mother Earth provides enough food for consumption, but due to wastage, India alone wastes food worth approximately that can be consumed by 337 million indviduals. “This not only affects our economy but also impacts the environment,” he added.
200 saplings were planted in and around Monsang Pantha village as part of Nation First @ 75 Campaign under Sewa Parv.
