Imphal, Mar 10:
Wakhal Mananba (WAMA), a prominent civil society organization, has sounded the alarm over the declining population of the Meitei community, potentially leading to minority status within the next three decades. The organization attributes this worrying trend to the prevalence of extravagant wedding ceremonies, which deter marriageable youths from tying the knot as they struggle to keep up with the demands of lavish celebrations. WAMA has issued a stern warning, urging an end to such extravagant ceremonies defying traditional rules by March 25.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club, Moirangthem Naokhomba, representing WAMA, emphasized the significance of Manipuri weddings in preserving the Meitei identity. He expressed dismay at the growing trend of elaborate rituals such as cake-cutting and ring ceremonies, which deviate from traditional wedding customs and erode cultural heritage.
Naokhomba highlighted findings from the Government’s National Family Health Survey, revealing a decline in the Meitei population. He warned that if the current trajectory persists, the majority Meitei community risks becoming a minority within the next 30 years.
Blaming the proliferation of extravagant wedding practices, including excessive decorations and non-traditional rituals, Naokhomba lamented the detrimental impact on Meitei cultural values. He criticized elite groups for prioritizing modern trends over traditional customs, leading to socioeconomic disparities that discourage marriage among low-income individuals and contribute to the declining Meitei population.
In a plea to safeguard Meitei traditions and promote cultural preservation, WAMA urged the community to eschew extravagant wedding ceremonies and embrace the essence of Manipuri wedding customs.
