A powerful bomb with a timer was found in front of the Ward Development Committee at Singjamei Chingamakha Maisnam Leikai today. The whereabouts of the bomb were sent to the corporator of Ward no 16, Thokchom Ongbi Eliza via Whatsapp, who inform the police. A team of Imphal West Commando rushed to the spot along with Manipur Police Bomb Squad and searched for the said bomb.
The entire area had to be cordoned off, and vehicles were stopped to ensure the safety of people. The bomb squad exploded the bomb at the same spot; no one was injured. The Manipur Bomb Squad took around 3 hours to detonate the bomb without any casualties safely.
Police said it was not yet known who was responsible for planting the bomb. A probe was initiated by the police. In the meantime, locals sit-in protest against planting the bomb in residential areas.
Local MLA of Singjamei AC Yumnam Khemchand also rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.
As per a source, the bomb may have been placed by one particular insurgent organisation that demanded Rs.10lakhs each from the 27 corporators of Imphal Municipal Corporation.
