It is admist this setting that 6 Assam Rifles shines as a beacon of hope, that has transcended its security role to become a vital pillar of support for the people of Tamenglong. The battalion has contributed significantly towards upliftment of the people of Tamenglong and also towards the region as a whole.
The battalion recognizes the critical role women play in a community’s development. In a significant move towards women’s empowerment through self-employment, they distributed sewing machines to women in Tamenglong, fostering self-reliance and income generation. Further, amplifying women’s voices, the battalion took a commendable step on International Women’s Day 2024 wherein they invited women speakers from diverse fields to address the women of Tamenglong in a public seminar. Additionally, the battalion has conducted various awareness lectures to address issues like health and hygiene, creating a holistic approach to empowerment of women of the region.
The battalion also understands that idle minds are susceptible to negative influences. Thus, in order to channelize the energy of Tamenglong’s youth in a positive direction, they have organised a variety of engaging events like marathons on various occasions promoting fitness and a sense of community, sports tournaments fostering teamwork and healthy competition and winter camps, offering a platform for character building and outdoor activities. These activities nurture leadership qualities, discipline, and a sense of adventure in the young minds of Tamenglong.
Recognizing the aspirations of young people, the battalion has also conducted pre-recruitment trainings for selection to various security forces to empower young boys and girls to pursue careers in service. Additionally, the battalion has also conducted coaching classes for students to bridge educational gaps and equip them for higher studies.
Access to quality healthcare can be a distant dream in remote regions like Tamenglong. 6 Assam Rifles have taken this challenge head-on by conducting a mobile medical camp across villages on the Vangai Ridge, a particularly inaccessible area. The mobile medical team of 6 AR provided much needed medical consultations, distributed medicines, and raised awareness about preventive healthcare. Additionally, the battalion has also conducted various medical camps throughout Tamenglong, ensuring that no local community is left behind.
Many villages in Tamenglong, owing to their remoteness, struggle with access to essential supplies. The battalion has played a crucial role in bridging this gap. They have distributed essential items, ensuring that basic needs of people are met and no one is left struggling. This timely intervention demonstrates the force’s commitment to the well-being of the community.
The battalion has gone beyond immediate needs and has contributed to Tamenglong’s longterm development. The construction of a community hall in L Pabram village by the battalion has provided a much needed space for public gatherings, meetings, and cultural events. Also, the construction of a large water storage tank in Kahulong village by the battalion has addressed a critical issue in the region by provision of access to clean water. These project will surely contribute in uplifting the health and hygiene standards and the overall standard of living of the people.
The battalion has also played a vital role in curbing insurgency in the region. However, their approach goes beyond mere security measures. They recognize the importance of winning hearts and minds. Their focus on community outreach has build trust and bridged the gap between the force and the local population.
