Thousands of women armed with bare hands today thronged at Keinou and Irengband area in Bisnupur district and dare the Indian army convoy while defending the villages in the adjoining areas of Bishnupur and Kongpokpi districts today.
A convoy of the Gorkha Regiment who came in two trucks was surrounded by a large number of irate women bare hands at Bungte Chiru Village area in the adjoining area of Kangpokpi and Bishnupur district today afternoon, suspected of supporting the armed Kuki militants whom the women were preparing to defend with just lathis in their hands. The anger of the women folk were fueled after three youths including a driver were arrested by the Indian army. Two of them were reported released while one was taken away. Later, the same youth was also released through the civil police of Bishnupur district at Keinou bazaar.
Since early morning, large women folk came to the Tiddim Road in-between the stretch from Kwakeithel to Bishnupur Bazar after report of Kuki militants preparing to attack the Villagers of Keinou area from Tingkaikhullen and Thingbai Village of Kangpokpi district. Women folk from across the state were seen rushing to the site in vehicles like never before at Tiddim Road, while many are seen preparing to stop Security forces convoy at many places starting from Kwakeithel to Bishnupur Bazar. Women folk have lost trust to the Indian Security forces particularly the Assam rifles and the Gorkha regiment as they are often seen siding the armed Kuki militants.
“At around 7 am today I heard some gunshots from the Tingkhakhullen area”, a woman told this reporter. “Then we were told that the armed Kuki militants are preparing for an attack on villages at close proximity”, she added. The village is located in the periphery of Kangpopkpi and Bishnupur districts. After the report of attacking Meitei village at the Keinou area in Bishnupur district reached out to people across the state women folk from various areas hired vehicles and rushed to the area.
The women folk rushed to the incident site bare hand in an open van with the spirit of fighting the well-armed and trained militants who are attacking the Meitei village. When team Imphal Times reached the spot over thousands of womenfolk were seen rounding up the vehicles of the Gorkha regiments at Bungte Chiru Village. Some women folk were seen preparing to face any attack by armed Kuki militants barehand.
“It is better to give our live than losing our sons and daughters and the land”, a woman told team Imphal Times when asked how are they going to face the armed militants if attacked with sophisticated weapons.
