Imphal, Sept 21:
Normal life came to a standstill in the valley districts of Manipur following an 18-hour bandh called by the militant outfit, National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM). The bandh, which commenced at midnight, was organized in protest against the signing of the controversial “Merger Agreement” between Maharaja Bodhchandra and the Government of India in 1949.
The bandh led to the closure of markets, business establishments, and banks across all five valley districts. Public transportation was severely impacted, with only a few private vehicles seen operating, while essential services remained unaffected by the shutdown.
The NRFM’s protest centered around the historical signing of the merger agreement, which integrated the princely state of Manipur into the Indian Union on October 15, 1949. This event continues to be a contentious issue for some groups in the state, who view it as an unjust incorporation.
Despite the disruption, the bandh passed without any reports of major incidents.
