ASUK declares total shutdown on Republic Day

Imphal, Jan 23:

Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK) has announced a 10-hour total shutdown across Manipur on January 26, 2025, on the occasion of India’s Republic Day. The shutdown will be enforced from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with exceptions for essential services such as medical emergencies and religious activities.
In a press release issued today, ASUK described India’s Republic Day as a celebration of a constitution that, according to the group, symbolizes the subjugation of Manipur. The organization reiterated that Manipur had a democratic and sovereign status before being forcibly merged with India on October 15, 1949. The press release detailed historical events, including the establishment of a democratic government in Manipur in 1947, and asserted that the merger marked the beginning of a colonial-style administration under India.
ASUK criticized the political system in Manipur as a remnant of colonialism, arguing that it has failed to uphold the rights and dignity of the people. It further emphasized the need for the people of Manipur to resist what it termed as “neo-colonial domination” and reclaim their historical legacy.
The group called on the public to observe the shutdown as a form of protest against the continued oppression and marginalization of the state under Indian governance. ASUK warned that the protest aims to highlight the systemic issues plaguing Manipur and the need for self-determination.
Citizens are urged to comply with the shutdown, with the organization stating that any activities unrelated to essential services will be prohibited during the period.
