Imphal, Jan 13:
The Assam Rifles has strongly refuted allegations made in an article published by the Imphal Times on 12 January 2025, titled “Kasom Khullen Villagers Storm 40 AR Camp at Hongpei, Accuse Assam Rifles of Harassment and MLA Disrespect.” In a statement, the force denied any misconduct or harassment as reported in the article.
According to the statement released by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Assam Rifles, personnel stationed at the Hongpei post conducted a routine inspection of a vehicle transporting timber on 11 January 2025. The inspection revealed that the vehicle lacked the mandatory documentation required for transporting such goods. As per procedure, the vehicle was detained.
The statement further claimed that, following this lawful action, some individuals instigated local residents to exert pressure on Assam Rifles personnel to release the detained vehicle without following due process. It was reported that the situation escalated when a crowd gathered and became aggressive. Assam Rifles personnel, while prioritizing public safety, responded in a controlled and measured manner to manage the situation effectively.
Senior officials of the Assam Rifles were said to be in discussions with the local administration and community representatives to resolve the matter peacefully and maintain harmony in the region.
The Assam Rifles also expressed concern over the publication of unverified information in the Imphal Times, emphasizing that such reports could disrupt communal harmony. The force urged media organizations to ensure thorough fact-checking before publishing sensitive content to avoid jeopardizing peace and trust among communities.
Reiterating its commitment to serving the people and upholding the rule of law, the Assam Rifles called for cooperation from all stakeholders, including the media, to foster mutual trust and understanding in the region.
