A public meeting was held at the Wanging Pukhri Achouba Lampak today at around 7.30 am to publicly declare the innocence of the two alleged accomplices of the main accused involved in the brutal rape and murder of Rebika whose dead body was recovered in the morning of June 6. Vehicular movement was disrupted due to the public meeting, and in the meantime received a rumour that residents of Wanging have started restricting the movement of people from Heirok area, and a mob soon assembled which started pelting stones with the villagers of Wanging. A team of police personnel rushed in to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control and had to resort to firing smoke bombs and tear gas as the mob started to physically attack the police personnel. During the chaos, Education Minister M Okendro of Heirok Kendra and P Brojen, MLA of Wangjing Tentha also arrived on the scene to try and intervene. At around 11.30am, while Minsiter Okendro was interacting with the people of Heitup Pokpi to find a solution to subside the situation, a large number of agitated mob of Heirok started damaging the personal car (MN 01S / 9439)of the minister as well as that of his escorts (MN01S/ 3408, MN01W / 3024, MN01W / 3025). State police managed to bring the situation under control, however about five CDO personnel sustained injuries besides a few on the side of the protestors. A few of the protestors were also pulled up. L Mandir- Chairman, JAC against brutal killing of Rebika applauded the swift and timely response of the state police personnel which averted a very undesirable and unfortunate situation.
