The 130th birth anniversary of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot was observed at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband, with All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy calling for the revival of Irabot’s ideals and his vision of a just society.
The commemorative programme was organised by AMUCO along with five other organisations.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjoy said Irabot began his social activities from his school days and devoted his life to the welfare and rights of the people. He said Irabot’s contribution extended beyond politics to social reform, culture, sports and people’s movements.
Sanjoy recalled Irabot’s struggles for farmers and workers against British colonial rule and his role in women’s movements, including the two Nupi Lan movements.
He said Irabot’s contributions remain relevant to Manipur and called upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from his leadership and social commitment.
Sanjoy added that AMUCO would continue efforts to preserve and carry forward the ideals and legacy of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot.
Irabot, born in 1896, is widely remembered in Manipur as a social reformer, political leader and advocate of peasants and workers.
