AMUCO and sister organisations to observe International Human Rights Day on December 10

AMAWOVA, AMUCO, COHR, MSF and Poirei Leimarol Apunba Manipur will observe International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2025, at multiple venues across the state. In connection with the observance, AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam issued a statement outlining the significance of the day and drawing attention to the ongoing human rights concerns in Manipur.
Sanjoy Sorokhaibam stated that the history of human civilisation has been shaped by continuous struggles for justice, equality and dignity. He recalled that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, set out 30 Articles guaranteeing civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, also reflected under Articles 12 to 35 of the Constitution of India.
He expressed concern that despite these constitutional provisions, several rights remain restricted in Manipur, especially under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958. Referring to the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, he said that more than 60,000 people have been displaced, around 250 lives have been lost and 35 individuals remain missing. He added that families continue to face hardships due to separation, unsafe travel routes, disrupted livelihoods and lack of access to welfare schemes.
He remarked that, despite the deployment of over 60,000 central paramilitary personnel, normalcy is yet to be restored. Citing this year’s global theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” and the national theme, “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” he said both themes reflect the urgent need to protect rights and restore dignity.
Highlighting conditions in relief camps, he said that many displaced families live in difficult circumstances and that the daily compensation of Rs. 84 for internally displaced persons is inadequate. He noted that buffer zones have made farmlands inaccessible, further weakening the state’s economy.
He added that public discussions include calls for political intervention, removal of AFSPA and long-term peace initiatives. He urged the people of Manipur to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding fundamental rights.
International Human Rights Day will be observed on December 10 at 10:00 AM at THAU Ground, Thangmeiband; Menjor Unity Park, Khangabok; Universal Academy, Sekmaijin Khunnou; Ningthoukhong Bazar; and Jiribam District Headquarters.
