AMUCO and other CSOs urge immediate central action to prevent ethnic polarisation

A coalition of Manipur-based civil society, youth, and women’s organisations today called on the Government of India to intervene urgently to curb rising ethnic tensions in the state, warning that political manoeuvres along ethnic lines are pushing Manipur toward instability. The joint statement was issued by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meirapaibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF).
The organisations demanded that New Delhi take decisive and proactive steps to restore peace and maintain law and order, stressing that the responsibility for stabilising the state primarily lies with the central government. They urged authorities to ensure that Central Forces act impartially and responsibly, avoiding actions that could escalate communal tensions.
The statement highlighted that recent unrest has been aggravated by attempts to exploit ethnic identities for political purposes, posing serious threats to public safety and undermining the welfare of ordinary citizens. The coalition emphasised that ethnic-polarising politics must end immediately and called for dialogue, cooperation, and community welfare to guide all interventions.
The organisations insisted that immediate action is needed to halt ethnic-based political manoeuvres, ensure impartial and accountable operations by Central Forces, and implement decisive measures by the Government of India to stabilise the state. They also stressed that policy decisions must be informed by lessons from past conflicts, including the unrest of 1990, to protect all communities.
Warning that any delay or inaction could deepen divisions and trigger prolonged instability, the coalition urged political leaders, civil society, and the public to prioritise peace, unity, and collaborative action to secure Manipur’s social and political fabric.
