The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Saturday announced that it will observe the 45th Realisation Month from March 17 to April 17, 2026, under the theme “Realise to Save the Indigenous Peoples of Manipur.”
Addressing a press meet, AMSU President Lukram Malangba said the month-long observance will include a series of activities such as discussions, seminars, discourses, poster campaigns highlighting population growth data, slogan campaigns, academic campaigns, street-corner meetings and public meetings across the state.
He said various competitions including debate, essay writing, symposium and painting will be organised to engage students and youths. A mass rally and a blood donation camp will also be held as part of the programme.
According to AMSU, the inaugural function of the 45th Realisation Month will be held at Manipur University on March 17.
AMSU President Lukram Malangba further stated that Manipur was once a princely state in Southeast Asia and was annexed to India in 1949. He also claimed that the permit system for outsiders entering Manipur was removed on November 18, 1950 by the then Chief Commissioner Himmat Singh without consulting the people of the state. He said that after the merger with India, population growth recorded in the 1951, 1961 and 1971 Census increased due to the influx of outsiders. In 1980, a mass agitation under the slogan “Go Back Foreigners” was launched against the alleged influx of migrants into the state. During the agitation spearheaded by AMSU, two students — Potshangbam Lukhoi (Premananda) and Huidrom Loken were killed in security force action, while many others were injured. Since then, AMSU has been observing April 17 every year as Realisation Day in memory of the sacrifice made by the student community.
He also heighlight the decadal population growth rate of 1951, 1961,1971, 1981, 1991,2001 and 2011. And also estimated number of migrants enter and settled in Manipur. The estimated already entered and assimilated with the local population during 1951 to 2011 is 11,01,934.
He further stated that on April 17, 2026, a floral tribute will be held at Pishum Chinga Macha. Following the tribute, a mass rally will proceed along Tiddim Road up to Imphal College, where a public meeting will be held.
