AMSU observes 57th Foundation Day

The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) observes its 57th Foundation Day today.
AMSU was born on this day of 1965 a day after the mass protest against the artificial famine created by the then government leading to the death of Nabakumar, Nilamani and Pramodini and Laishram Chaobhal Singh.
On 28 August 1965, a meeting of students presided by Nameirakpam Madhusadan Singh was held at the residence of Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma at Keishampat Laisom Leirak, leading to the formation of AMSU. Next day, the first Executive Council of AMSU was constituted at a meeting held at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai (residence of Gurumayum Jatishwar Sharma) and presided over by N. Birendrakumar. Thiyam Gambhir and Loitongbam Tombi Singh were elected as the President and the General Secretary of the 36-member Ad-hoc Executive body of AMSU.
Jiribam District Committee of The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) observed the 57th foundation day at its conference hall at AMSU office, Babupara Jiribam.
The observation function was attended by H. Priyananda Singh, Ex-President, AMSU District Committee, Jiribam; Thanil Thokchom, President, AMSU District Committee and A. Ashangbi Devi, President, Jiri Imma Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (JIMPAL) as a Chief Guest, President and Guest of honour respectively.
The function began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by hoisting of Union’s flag by the Chief Guest while Eden Ngaihte, Organising Secretary, AMSU District Committee Jiribam delivered the welcome address and keynote speech.
From the invitees L. Jaminikanta Singh, Asst. Professor,Jiri College; H. Gobardhon Singh, Ex-President, AMSU and Dr. Arun Kumar Mangang, Ex-president, AMSU delivered speech recalling how the student body was formed amidst extreme protest against the food scarcity in 1965.
They also highlighted about the responsibilities and duties of the student body.
They also talked about the roles and contribution of AMSU taken up in Jiribam context.
Thereafter, they highlighted about the fast growth rate of non-indigenous population since last few decades which may surpassed the indigenous population.
They also said to counter such illegal influx, it’s the urgent need to fix the base year of Inner Line Permit System (ILPS).

The Tengnoupal district Committee of AMSU also observed the day at border town Moreh by hoisting the flag of the student body. On the occasion prizes of 1st Inter School Literary Meet -2022 held at Eastern Shine School Hall on August 19 and 20 in connection with the Foundation Day observance of AMSU was also distributed today.
Speaking on the occasion President of the AMSU Tengnoupal District Committee, N Tomba recounted the story of how AMSU was born on this day. He recounted the sacrifices of three student leaders and a driver of the AIR Imphal during mass uprising against artificial famine on August 27 of 1965. On the following day AMSU was born, he said.
“ Since the birth of AMSU various issues like – influx of Foreigner, inclusion of Manipuri Language in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution, agitation against AFSPA etc. have been taken up”, he said.
