The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) today inaugurated its month-long 46th Realization Programme 2026 under the theme “Realise to Save the Indigenous Peoples of Manipur” at the Conference Hall of the Chemistry Department, Manipur University.
Speaking at the inaugural function, AMSU President Lukram Malangba stated that earlier the Realization Day was observed only on April 17 every year. However, from this year, the observance has been extended to a month-long programme from March 17 to April 17, 2026, in view of pressing issues such as the census and delimitation.
He recalled that AMSU began observing Realization Day in 1980 during the “Go Back Foreigners” movement, in memory of Potsangbam Premananda (Lukhoi) and Huidrom Lokendro, who were killed in police firing, while many others were injured. Since then, April 17 has been observed to pay homage to the student martyrs.
AMSU President Lukram Malangba further said that observing the programme for just one day was not sufficient to achieve its objectives, hence the decision to organise a month-long observance.
He also mentioned that on July 22, 1980, AMSU and AMSCO signed an accord with the Manipur Government, agreeing to use 1951 as the base year for the identification of foreigners in the state. The agreement was signed twice with the state government, but could not be implemented following the intervention of the Central Government.
The AMSU President Lukram Malangba informed that the month-long programme will include a series of activities such as discussions, seminars, academic campaigns, poster campaigns highlighting population growth, slogan campaigns, street-corner meetings, and public meetings across the state.
Various competitions including debates, essay writing, symposiums, and painting contests will also be organised to engage students and youth. A mass rally and a blood donation camp are also part of the programme.
During the inaugural function, a leaflet was jointly released by the dignitaries present.
The programme was attended by AMSU President Lukram Malangba, Prof. N. Mohilal former AMSU President and Dean of the School of Life Sciences Manipur University, Prof. R.K. Narendra Renowned demographer, Y.K. Dhiren President of UCM, W. Sanatomba Assistant Secretary General of NESO, and Saragthem Sidananda, Literary and Publication Secretary of MUSU, graced the inaugural function as President, Chief Guest, Resource Person, and Guests of Honour respectively.
