AMESCO, MNKL and AMACSU call for preservation of Meitei customs and traditions

AMESCO, MNKL and AMACSU have jointly appealed to the people to preserve and uphold the traditional customs, cultural practices and religious heritage of the Meitei community, describing them as a legacy handed down by their ancestors.

In a joint statement signed by Media Coordinator Deepu Wangkhem, the three organisations expressed concern over the increasing number of events conducted in the name of Meitei tradition without adhering to established customary practices. They said such deviations could gradually erode the cultural identity of the community and mislead future generations.

The organisations urged that all Meitei ceremonies, including those relating to birth, marriage, death and religious observances, be conducted in accordance with customary laws rooted in traditional Meitei practices. They maintained that these customs have evolved over generations and form the foundation of Meitei identity.

The statement further said the organisations would take appropriate action, in accordance with customary laws and with public support, against deliberate violations of established cultural norms. It clarified that the objective was not confrontation but the protection of Meitei traditions and identity.

The organisations also appealed to organisers of public functions and event management agencies to consult them in advance whenever clarification on cultural practices is required. They called upon the public and cultural organisations to work collectively to safeguard the customs and traditions of the Meitei community.
