Imphal, Dec 8:

The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee, staged a protest demonstration today at Irawat Bhavan, Imphal BT Road, highlighting the ongoing crisis in the state and the hardships endured by its people. Members of the AITUC demanded immediate political resolution, fulfillment of workers’ and farmers’ rights, repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958, and justice for recent incidents of violence.
Addressing the protest, L. Sotinkumar, General Secretary of AITUC Manipur, criticized the government for neglecting workers, particularly ASHA workers engaged in relief camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He pointed out that despite their critical role, these workers face delayed and insufficient wages. Sotinkumar urged the government to address their grievances and ensure timely payments.
Highlighting the worsening situation in the state, Sotinkumar called on the central government to initiate a political dialogue with Kuki-Zo legislators to bring an end to the crisis. He emphasized that only a meaningful political solution could restore peace and stability.
The protest also demanded strict action against perpetrators of heinous crimes against the Meetei community, particularly those involved in the Jiribam massacre. The demonstrators urged the government to arrest and punish all individuals and terrorist groups associated with these acts of violence.
Additionally, the AITUC demanded the safe release of Laishram Kamalbabu, who remains in captivity, and stressed the need for the establishment of Highway Protection Forces to ensure the safety of transport routes amidst the prevailing insecurity.
The protest drew significant participation from workers, activists, and community members, reflecting growing frustration over the government’s failure to address the multi-faceted crisis gripping Manipur. The demonstrators reiterated their commitment to continue voicing their demands until tangible actions are taken.
