Imphal, July 19:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State Committee has issued a press release demanding improved working conditions for ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers as well as hike in their salary to 15000 rupees. The announcement was made by the committee’s president, Dr. M. Nara Singh, and general secretary, L. Sotin Kumar Singh, from the Irawat Bhawan Complex on B.T. Road, Imphal.
The press release emphasizes the pressing need for both central and state governments to address the demands of ASHA workers. These demands include the regularization of their positions, better wages, and improved working conditions. Despite their crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, ASHA workers have not received adequate support or recognition. They were instrumental in performing tasks such as home visits, contact tracing, and spreading awareness about the virus, often without proper personal protective equipment (PPE) or timely payment for their efforts.
Currently, ASHA workers are treated more as volunteers than employees, with neither proper job security nor benefits. The central government provides a mere Rs. 2,000, while the state government offers Rs. 1,000, which AITUC asserts is insufficient. The state’s share should be increased to Rs. 15,000, according to the union’s demands.
AITUC Manipur highlighted the urgent need for budget allocation to address these issues. The Manipur ASHA Workers Union has threatened to go on strike if their demands are not met. The state’s Health Minister has assured AITUC of prompt action, but the union remains vigilant, stressing that this matter requires immediate and sustained attention.
The union’s secretary, L. Sotin Kumar Singh, urged media outlets to highlight this cause and support the ASHA workers’ fight for their rights.
