AIMS urges Fisheries Minister to declare Fishing Holiday

IT News
Imphal, July 2:

The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur has submitted a memorandum to Fisheries Minister Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh to declare a “fishing holiday” for the welfare of fishermen. The memo mentions that the State Government needs to be decided to impose restrictions on fishing from July to August each year to conserve fish stocks in Manipur during the breeding season of fishes.
In order to avoid disturbances during the breeding season, it has to be instructed to the fishermen not to catch fish during the ban period. It will help unhindered breeding of fish and aim to conserve fish species during the monsoon, which is the spawning season for many varieties of fish in Manipur.
So, it is very pertinent to declare it as a “Fishing Holiday” during the breeding period. Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Director, Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), informs that declaration of the fishing holiday would help conserve the fish stock and increase the locally available fish population. It will lead to reducing the import quantity of fish from outside Manipur and will also help to boost the economy of the fishermen.
