Licypriya Kangujam, a dynamic 12-year-old climate activist hailing from Manipur, who recently garnered attention when she was ejected from the prestigious COP28 meeting in Dubai after staging an impromptu protest urging urgent measures against fossil fuels, arrived in Imphal today. Being a Manipuri, upon her arrival at Imphal International Airport, she has announced her intention to proceed to the Churachandpur district.
“I am absolutely going to Churachandpur, but before that, I will meet with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh today or tomorrow to secure assurances regarding my safety and security, which is of paramount importance. Once I have taken these necessary precautions, I will proceed with my plans,” she affirmed.
Expressing her dismay at the impact of climate change in Manipur, particularly driven by deforestation, she denounced the illegal practice of massive poppy plantations. “I vehemently oppose this detrimental activity. It not only harms the environment but also poses risks to human health. The interconnectedness of such practices with the current climate crisis is evident,” she emphasized.
Since the outbreak of violence in Manipur on May 3, she has been an outspoken advocate for the Meitei communities. Upon her arrival at Imphal International Airport, a multitude of individuals gathered to warmly welcome and engage with Licypriya.
