Imphal, Feb 9:
In an interesting scene witnessed today during the scrutiny for candidates’ nomination papers for the Thongju Assembly constituency, the affidavit of the congress candidate Seram Niken was found to be without the signature of the Notary or the Oath Commissioner.
As per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, all the affidavits filed by candidates to the returning officer should be countersigned by the Notary Officer or in other words by the Oath Commissioner. However, when the nomination papers filed by the Congress Candidates Seram Niken were checked, it was found that in all the four affidavits submitted by Seram Neken, the INC candidate was found without the signature of the Notary or the Oath Commissioner except his own.
The matter was indeed a serious one as it could be treated as incomplete or could be challenged. Further, this could remain as a hurdle to the political career of the candidate if in case any person challenges it through the proper forum.
However, BJP candidate Biswajit didn’t make much complaints except pointing it out and requested the Returning Officer to accept his candidature terming it as ignorance of the Congress party and its candidate.
Three candidates who are in the fray in the Thongju Assembly constituency have cleared the scrutiny. Works Minister Th. Biswajit is contesting as BJP candidate, Seram Neken as INC candidate and S. Preshyojit as JDU candidate.
