Imphal, Jan 2:

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has confirmed the completion of a 9.214 km-long border fence at Moreh, along the Indo-Myanmar border, in its Annual Report for 2023-2024. The project, executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), aims to bolster security, curb illegal activities, and improve infrastructure in the region. Additionally, work is underway to construct a road alongside the fence to enhance accessibility and border management.
In February 2024, the MHA awarded the BRO the construction of an additional 20.862 km of border fencing and roadwork, with progress already underway. The India-Myanmar border, spanning over 1,600 km, is known for its porous nature, making it a hotspot for smuggling, human trafficking, and insurgent activities. Moreh, a key border town and trade hub, has been particularly vulnerable to these challenges.
The newly completed fencing is a critical step in addressing these issues, aiming to restrict unauthorised crossings and mitigate the movement of arms, drugs, and counterfeit goods that fuel illicit trade networks. It also serves as a strategic measure to counter insurgent groups operating across the border.
Beyond security, the fencing initiative is part of broader efforts to improve the region’s infrastructure. The India-Myanmar border has historically been underserved, and these projects are expected to benefit local communities while strengthening national security. Out of the 1,643 km-long Indo-Myanmar border, 1,472 km has already been demarcated.
In addition to fencing projects, India is enhancing border surveillance through advanced technologies. Two pilot projects of a hybrid surveillance system are under development in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Executed by the Assam Rifles, these initiatives aim to enable real-time monitoring and improve overall border management.
