38 cases for unlawful items smuggling were registered during Jan to June 2016

Imphal, Sept. 2: In a concerted effort to check smuggling of unlawful items and drug trafficking, 38 (thirty eight) cases were registered during the period from January 2016 to June 2016 by the NAB.
 In connection with these cases, NAB (Narcotics and Affairs of Border) /District Police seized goods like Heroin- 1. 364 kgs; Ganja- 48 packets and 118.5 kgs; Opium- 26.610 kgs; Nitrosun (N-10)- 8 strips and 466 tablets; Amphetamine- 140 tablets; Cough Syrup- 18 cartons and 533 bottles; SP tablets- 298 strips and 15, 333 capsules; Brown Sugar- 96.6 gms; Pseudo-Ephe- 20, 000 Actifin Tablets; WY Tablets- 2, 575 tablets; Halontrec Tablets- 20 tablets and Drug Capsules- 18 capsules too. 
Further, during the same period, 455 acres of illegal Opium/ Ganja Plantation (18 acres of Ganja Plantation and 437 acres of Poppy Plantation) were destroyed by combined teams of NAB, District Police and Security Forces at various places of Chandel, Ukhrul, Churachandpur and Senapati districts.
Having felt the urgency for appropriate action to curb the growing inflow of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances in the State, a narcotic Special Cell was opened in the Police Department in January, 1985.
Further, the temporary post of the Special Officer (intelligence) was re-designated as Superintendent of Police (Border affairs) Manipur in the year 1985.
The office of the superintendent of police, Border Affairs started functioning as a Police Station with the territorial jurisdiction extending over the whole of Manipur for the purpose of dealing with offences punishable under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985
Further, the Government of Manipur in 1992 accorded approval for utilizing the services of the Superintendent of Police, Border Affairs for the works like Narcotics drugs Matter, Arms smuggling activities and Infiltration of foreigners till such time the post of Superintendent of Police (Border Affairs) is re-designated as Superintendent of Police (Narcotics and Affairs of Border) with the approval of the Govt. of India.
Since then the Superintendent of Police, Narcotics and Affairs of Border continued to function practically as the Nodal Officer in respect of Police Department, Manipur to co-ordinate with the Narcotic Control Bureau, New Delhi and its regional unit at Imphal.
It may be mentioned that the border State of Manipur is situated very near to the so-called Golden triangle (Myanmar, Laos & Thailand). It also shares a highly porous international boundary of approximately 365.5 km with Myanmar all along the dense hilly region facilitating almost free movement of underground elements and drug traffickers and all sorts of unlawful activities.
