Imphal, Dec 28:
A 24-hour total shutdown called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Late Khul-Ngakpa Prem has disrupted normal life in Imphal and surrounding districts. Residents, including members of the Meira Paibis, took to the streets to enforce the shutdown. The usually bustling Paona and Thangal Keithel markets in Imphal were deserted as shopkeepers closed their establishments. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, also remained shut, and roads across the valley saw minimal activity.
The shutdown, which began yesterday, is set to continue until 6:00 PM today. The shutdown gathered momentum with support from local clubs, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the Women’s Wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI). The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has decided not to claim Laishram Prem’s body until their demands are fulfilled. The JAC is demanding strict action against police officials allegedly involved in the death of Laishram Prem and the unconditional release of six village defense volunteers arrested in connection with the incident.
