The 227th death anniversary of Maharaj Rajarshi Bhagyachandra, the revered Manipuri king and saint, was observed at the Sri Sri Anumahaprabhu Mandir Complex, Nabadwip Dham. The programme was organised by the Sri Sri Anumahaprabhu Sebait Samittee, Nabadwip Dham.
Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Thockchom Satyabarta Singh, attended as chief guest, while Professor Hidangmayum Amujao Sharma presided over the function. The event was also graced by Sagolsem Dhritakumar and Oinam Jayshree of AMGSA, Meihoubam Satyaban, Guru of JNMDA, and Guru Lukram Manglembi of JNMDA as guests of honour.
In his presidential address, Professor Amujao Sharma said Manipur’s identity is deeply rooted in the legacy of Maharaj Bhagyachandra, who laid the foundation of Manipuri culture and traditions. He emphasised the need to safeguard cultural heritage from erosion and announced a proposal to construct a new temple at the site with an estimated cost of Rs 1.3 crore, seeking government support for the project.
Delivering his speech, Speaker Thockchom Satyabarta Singh highlighted that Maharaj Bhagyachandra, who ruled Manipur over 240 years ago, not only defended the kingdom during turbulent times but also gifted the world the Ras Leela, a spiritual and cultural treasure that continues to inspire. He also noted that Manipuris visiting Nabadwip find a deep spiritual connection, calling for collective efforts to preserve the legacy by building a new temple at the sacred site.
The commemoration concluded with prayers and cultural offerings in honour of Maharaj Bhagyachandra’s enduring contributions.
