Imphal, Dec 11:

Priyakanta Laishram’s THE FOUL TRUTH – AMAKPA ACHUMBA, an award winning Manipuri film written, edited and directed by Priyakanta Laishram is known for being the first ever film from North East India to highlight the untouched subject of Male Rape (Male Sexual Assault). The film revolves around the life story of a boy named “Thoithoiba” who is a male rape survivor and his struggle.
Priyakanta Laishram stated, “THE FOUL TRUTH” for me is a challenge and mission for me as an actor, a director and as a human being. I am carrying a very big responsibility with this. Being accepted by the people or not, it’s a fact! Men and boys are raped everyday. Male sexual abuse has profound effects on those who experienced it and can deeply affect their mental health and relationships. Anyone regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or physical strength can be raped anywhere, anytime. Men are raped by both women and men. It is difficult for a male victim, heterosexual or homosexual, to report the sexual assault that was experienced by him, especially in a society with a strong masculine custom. They are afraid that people will doubt their sexual orientation and label them as gay, or that they may be seen as unmasculine because they were a victim.”
It is the fact that 1 in every 6 men have experienced sexual abuse or sexual assault, whether in childhood or as adults. The social stigma and silence around male sexual abuse results in the lack of awareness and understanding about the effects of these experiences, and what men need to move forward.
The Foul Truth – Amakpa Achumba by Priyakanta Laishram acknowledges the human spirit of a teen boy, who endures unimaginable brutalities and yet, dares to live. The film is a disturbing account of the ugly truth that makes your stomach churn. Director Priyakanta makes you take a closer look at reality, which is hard to fathom. It takes a hero to make a film on this topic! Over the last few years, Priyakanta Laishram has quickly established himself as one of the most influential filmmakers, both for his tense and carefully crafted scripts and for the virtuosity of his realism in acting and directing. The film stars Rojesh Saikhom, Priyakanta Laishram, Harry Tourangbam, Harendra Laishram and Sophia Sapam in lead roles. It is a must watch!
