From Matam Esheis to Indie Bands: The Shifting Musical Landscape of Manipur

By – Marjing Mayanglambam
Music and art have been a big weapon for human society in various ways since their inception. Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” This quote underlines the essential role of music in human existence, implying that music is foundational to society’s survival and meaning. Life is incomplete without music; with music, life is more meaningful. There is a Manipuri adage stating that a person who never hums or sings a song in their life does not achieve happiness ever. I believe in this adage not just because I am a musician, but have encountered such a person. But who am I to judge a person? It is their life, their choice.
As Bono, the lead singer of U2, wisely stated, “Music can change the world because it can change people.” This sentiment rings true when we examine the profound transformation that has occurred in the musical landscape of Manipur. The evolution and emergence of various indie, hard rock, soft rock, experimental, and pop bands have significantly transformed the region’s musical landscape, which was previously dominated by Hindustani raga-based Matam Esheis. Matam Esheis typically consist of songs compiled into albums, with or without accompanying videos, and has been prominent in radio and television programming. Historically, they were largely audio-centric. Over time, minor shifts have occurred, with some songs incorporating indigenous or folk elements instead of adhering strictly to Hindustani ragas. A notable development was the inclusion of Pena instrumental music, although, according to accounts I have heard, its use was often not voluntary but encouraged—or even enforced—by certain groups. Nonetheless, Matam Esheis have largely retained their fundamental framework, with the primary evolution being the adoption of more advanced musical instruments.
I aim to explore and analyse the friendly counterparts of Matam Esheis—specifically within the genres I have previously mentioned, such as indie, hard rock, and related styles. I will use the term “neo-music” for the above genres. I have deliberately chosen not to provide an extensive definition of Matam Esheis, as this write-up is primarily intended for Manipuri readers. Nevertheless, should non-Manipuri readers familiar with Matam Esheis encounter this work, it would be a welcome and unexpected blessing. As for the other musical genres referenced, my engagement with them is shaped by a personal upbringing immersed in the rich traditions of Western music, exemplified by iconic bands such as The Beatles, Scorpions, Queen, and others.
Manipur’s society’s image is being portrayed through various means in Neo-music. Some bands focus on the lyrics, while some on their music video and a few use both. I can sense the revival of focusing more on the lyrics than melodies or tunes. Lyrics, rhythms, and melodies or tunes constitute the main components of a complete song. Revolutionary essence is seen in some neo-music, which gives strength to listeners while some lyrics are historical and hence educational if listened to and processed properly by the listener’s mind. Lyrics play an important role in any song, and Manipur has proudly produced lyricists of Neo-music who have written powerful songs which has touched the souls of many. Amidst the crisis and struggling society, Manipur is doing its best in providing platforms for the neo-music practitioners, and I wish that more opportunities shall come to them. Authenticity is what we need for music to develop more, and Neo-music bands should work more on this matter. Quality over quantity should matter more than seeking temporary fame.
Dear music lovers, it is vital to recognize that musicians are not merely entertainers; they are valuable service providers who contribute profoundly to the cultural and emotional well-being of society. Their profession—creating, performing, and sharing music—requires not only talent but also years of dedication, practice, and personal sacrifice. Therefore, we mustn’t take their work for granted.
Musicians deserve, without exception, both our respect and our tangible support. This includes honouring their professional fees in a timely and fair manner, as well as acknowledging their role with the dignity they deserve. Just as we value the services of doctors, teachers, and other professionals, so too must we value the services of musicians, whose performances enrich our lives in countless ways. Let us remember that respecting musicians is not merely an act of courtesy, but a recognition of their vital place in the fabric of society. Support them not just with applause, but with action, ensuring that their needs are met promptly, respectfully, and wholeheartedly.
To conclude this article, I would like to recommend several Neo-music bands that I have encountered in my explorations: Solace Her, Shei-Huum, Meewakching, and Innocent Eyes. It would, however, be remiss of me not to also mention The Koi and Imphal Talkies, whose contributions remain significant.
