Academicians Must Rise to Save Manipur University

Manipur University, the beacon of learning and a centre of intellectual excellence in the North East, is once more caught in the crosscurrents of controversy and administrative decay. The recent reports circulating across Manipur’s media paint a deeply troubling picture — one of eroded academic freedom, compromised standards, and institutional rot creeping into a place meant to nurture minds and shape the future of our state.
It is not the first time the University has been dragged into crisis. From the turbulent years under previous administrations to the recurring allegations of irregular recruitment, misuse of power, and politicisation of academic governance, the pattern has become painfully familiar. Each time, the promise of reform is made, and each time the system quietly slides back into disarray. What was once envisioned as a citadel of higher learning has too often been reduced to a theatre of bureaucratic manoeuvres and personal ambitions.
The situation today demands more than lamentation. It calls for action — urgent, collective, and principled action — especially from the academic community. The teachers, researchers, and intellectuals of Manipur University cannot afford to remain silent spectators while the very foundation of their institution is being shaken. Silence now is complicity. Every academic who values integrity and the sanctity of education must recognise that the fight to protect Manipur University is not political; it is moral.
A university thrives on transparency, meritocracy, and freedom of thought. When recruitment processes are questioned, when decision-making is reduced to a handful of interests, and when dissenting voices are stifled, the spirit of the university dies a slow death. Those entrusted with its leadership — whether administrators, deans, or members of statutory bodies — must be held to the highest standards of accountability. The University’s Statutes and Act are not ornamental texts; they are the living constitution that guards its academic soul. To disregard them is to betray the trust of students, faculty, and society at large.
The role of the academic fraternity, therefore, extends beyond teaching and research. They are the conscience keepers of the institution. It is their responsibility to question irregularities, to demand transparency, and to uphold the sanctity of the university’s governance structure. The teachers’ associations, student unions, and civil society must stand together — not for factions or political alignments, but for truth and institutional survival.
It is also time for the University’s Visitor, the Ministry of Education, and the University Grants Commission to intervene decisively and restore order through impartial enquiry and corrective measures. The rot cannot be treated with cosmetic changes or token accountability. Structural reforms — in recruitment, financial oversight, and administrative autonomy — must be pursued to ensure that the University remains a place of learning, not a playground for vested interests.
Manipur University belongs to the people of Manipur. It is the intellectual heart of our society, and if it falters, the future of generations will suffer. The academicians must rise above fear and faction to defend the dignity of their profession and the integrity of their institution. History will not forgive those who watched silently as the citadel of learning crumbled.
Now is the time to act — with courage, unity, and unwavering commitment — to reclaim Manipur University from the shadows and restore it to the light of scholarship, integrity, and hope.
