With global heating, mountainous areas are also at risk of permafrost degradation, “glacial lake-outburst floods” (GLOFs), and increasingly erratic rainfall, raising flood and landslide risk. In 2021, a Himalayan glacier broke off and caused flash flooding in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, leaving 200 people dead or missing. Nepal has more than 2,000 glacial lakes, of which 21 are considered potentially dangerous. Nepal is a hotspot for climate disasters as the planet heats up. Vast swaths of ice up in the Himalayas are melting, and rocky mountainsides are becoming less solid and more fluid. Subsequent research suggested that a 27-cubic-metre avalanche of rock and glacier ice had transformed into “an extraordinarily large and mobile debris flow”. Though not thought to be a cause of the August 2026 event, mountain areas are also at risk of “glacial lake outburst floods”. A glacial collapse registering as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event occurred near the border on Wednesday morning Hundreds of people have died in catastrophic flash floods in Nepal. On Wednesday the 26th August-2026 morning at 8:37 a.m. local time, a landslide of ice and rock resulted in a torrent of mud, water and debris bursting the banks of the Trishuli River, also known as the Bhotekoshi, which runs between China and Nepal.
Homes, roads, bridges and power plants were swept away. Experts at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said water levels on the Trishuli River rose by as much as nine metres in half an hour. The Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Trishuli, was most affected. Initial reports suggested the floods could have been caused by an earthquake in the ‘ area that triggered a landslide. However, the US Geological (USGS) subsequently said that a glacial collapse was responsible for the seismic event and for the flooding itself. The USGS noted that the glacial collapse had registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, occurring near the border between Nepal and China at 8.37am local time on Wednesday
According to Daniel Shugar, a geomorphologist and associate professor at the University of Calgary in Canada, initial satellite analysis showed a 0.2 sq km chunk of ice had “collapsed about 1.2km vertically”. According to satellite imagery from Planet Labs, the lower part of a glacier broke off at about 5,200 metres and crashed on to the valley floor about 1,200 metres below The imagery seemed to show that a large amount of snow had melted in the 24 hours prior to the disaster. “Some of the glaciers in the valley were covered in snow day before and the day itself, they are mostly bare ice. So it was probably warm construction could also be a factor. Prof Andrew Mackintosh, a glaciologist at Monash University in Melbourne, said it was unclear whether the collapse was isolated to the glacier, or was the “whole mountainside collapsing that included part of the glacier”.”When a glacier of that scale collapses, it generates a lot of water, and then there’s a cascading sequence of events where the water and the sediment combine and bulks up and creates the flood.
The flood wave -a cascade of water, pulverized ice and rock — “descended the first 22 kilometres (13.7 miles) at an average speed of 193 kilometres per hour (120 mph). That means it travelled nearly 14 miles in just 6 minutes and 50 seconds. Most people think of flash floods as being caused by heavy rainfall, but in Nepal and Tibet, as in many other high-mountain regions, they can also result from complex chains of hazards, including landslides (and) avalanches. More than 1344 people have been confirmed dead while more than 5000 remain missing including hundreds of foreign-nationals, across Nepal and China’s Tibet. In Nepal, at least 389 people have been killed and 910 remain missing, including more than 500 foreign nationals. Across the border, at least three people have died in Tibet’s Gyirong County, where 558 remain missing, including 260 foreign nationals.
Among those reported missing in Nepal are: India: 177; United States 90 :;Australia: 34; United Kingdom: 33; United Kingdom: 33. Beijing’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 100 Chinese nationals were among those missing in Nepal. Officials have warned that the death toll is likely to rise as rescuers reach areas that remain inaccessible because of damaged roads, high water levels and thick layers of mud. Many of those caught up in the disaster were pilgrims travelling towards Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet. Tourism officials are working to account for groups that had been travelling through the region when the floods struck.
Nepalese soldiers and rescue teams have been deployed with helicopters, drones and search dogs, but high river levels, damaged roads and mud have complicated efforts to reach some of the worst-hit areas. More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police personnel have been mobilised for the rescue operation, while helicopters are searching for survivors and delivering emergency supplies to communities cut off by damaged roads and flooding.
India has sent a rescue aircraft carrying about 10 tonnes of emergency supplies to Nepal, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has released 1 million Swiss francs ($1.2m) in emergency funding to support the Nepal Red Cross Society’s relief operations and damage assessments. The United Nations has deployed personnel in Nepal to support government-led relief efforts, while its office in China has said it is ready to assist rescue operations in Tibet. The United States said it was sending a disaster response adviser and providing $500,000 in assistance.
The disaster comes against a backdrop of rapid warming and glacial loss across the Himalayas. Glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya mountain range – which spans Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan – lost ice 65 percent faster between 2011 and 2020 than during the previous decade. Nepal’s glaciers have lost close to one-third of their ice volume in roughly three decades. As glaciers retreat, mountain slopes can become increasingly unstable while melt water can accumulate in or around glaciers, increasing the potential for sudden floods.
