RIMS gets NMC nod to increase MBBS seats to 150

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase its annual MBBS intake from 125 to 150 seats for the 2026–27 academic session, marking a major boost to medical education in the North East.

In another significant development, the National Dental Commission (NDC) has granted permission to the Dental College, RIMS, to commence Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programmes from the 2026–27 academic year in six specialities, with an intake of three seats in each discipline.

The approved MDS specialities are Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology, Periodontology, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge.

The approvals are expected to significantly strengthen RIMS’ academic infrastructure, expand postgraduate dental education, and enhance the availability of specialist training in the region. The increase in MBBS seats will also create additional opportunities for aspiring medical students, particularly from Manipur and other North Eastern states.
