TNL calls 24-hour total shutdown; Demands removal of Assam Rifles outpost and action against personnel

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, June 9:
The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across its jurisdiction beginning at 7:00 pm on yesterday evening, following a resolution adopted during a Joint Co-ordination Meeting held on Monday.

The shutdown has been called to press for the immediate removal of the alleged illegal Assam Rifles outpost at New Haven along National Highway-202 and to demand stringent criminal action against army personnel accused of using excessive force against peaceful women protesters.

According to the TNL, the shutdown is a collective response to the incidents that reportedly took place at New Heaven, Shokvao, and Finch Corner, where women demonstrators were allegedly subjected to brutal assault and intimidation while participating in peaceful protests. The apex Tangkhul body described the incidents as grave violations of democratic rights and an affront to the dignity of Naga women.

The organization stated that the shutdown reflects the growing public outrage over the deployment and actions of security personnel in the area and reiterated its demand for accountability and justice. It further asserted that the continued presence of the Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven has become a matter of serious concern for the local population.

While announcing the shutdown, TNL clarified that essential services would remain exempted from its purview. Medical services, water supply, electricity, and media operations will be allowed to function uninterrupted during the 24-hour period.

The shutdown is expected to affect normal movement and commercial activities across Tangkhul areas as civil society organizations and community members rally behind the demands for justice, accountability, and the protection of civilian rights.
