The ongoing enforcement drive against Single Use Plastics (SUPs) in Manipur has resulted in the seizure of over 6,637 kg of banned items and the imposition of Rs. 2.30 lakh as Environmental Compensation (EC) on violators since April 15, 2025.
According to an official report, the drive is being conducted jointly by the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB), the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (E&CC), and the concerned Urban Local Bodies. The campaign follows the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, as amended by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
The enforcement teams carried out multiple operations in major markets including Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar, Singjamei, Uripok, Wangkhei, Kakching, Bishnupur, and Thoubal. Thangal Bazar alone accounted for repeated seizures, with major recoveries made from commercial establishments such as M/S Sushant Varieties (1,011 kg), M/S Kastury (125 kg), M/S Nidhi Traders (493 kg), and M/S RD Enterprises (940 kg). Another significant seizure was made from M/S SK Bina Plastic at Wangkhei (787 kg).
Seized plastic items have been destroyed and handed over to authorized recycling agencies under the centralized Extended Producer’s Responsibility (EPR) framework. On August 9, a consignment of 4,464 kg of destroyed plastic carry bags was transferred to Kakarania Innovative System Pvt. Ltd., Meghalaya through M/S Ashok Traders.
As part of the initiative, the authorities have also distributed 10,000 biodegradable bags, 4,000 cotton carry bags, and awareness leaflets to vendors and organized campaigns in schools, colleges, and localities.
Despite these measures, officials admitted to facing challenges in enforcement. Many sections of the public remain reluctant to switch to eco-friendly alternatives, while a growing black market for banned plastic carry bags has complicated the crackdown. Authorities stressed the need for stronger awareness campaigns to ensure long-term compliance and reduce dependence on SUPs.
