Langjing Purel of Meitei Leepun, Heishnam Shilan, has raised questions over the decision of the United Naga Council (UNC) to prevent Nagas from participating in the World Indigenous Day programme held at the City Convention Centre on July 29. Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, he said the UNC must clarify if there was any hidden agenda behind the ban, citing the event will be attended by Meiteis as well. Shilan reminded that Manipur is home to 10 indigenous groups—Meitei, Tangkhul, Mao, Maram, Paomei, Liangmai, Zeme, Inpui, and Kabui.
He further expressed disappointment that several civil society organisations (CSOs), which had earlier spoken strongly in favour of the state’s territorial integrity, have remained silent on the banning of Ashang Kashar, who had openly advocated for unity and integrity. He questioned the silence of these organisations.
Referring to past incidents, Shilan recalled that the Liangmai community had blockaded the German-Tiger Road for 21 days, prompting the government to engage with them and persuade them to suspend the agitation. In contrast, he criticised the government’s inaction over the current situation, where Meiteis are restricted to travel only up to 15 kilometres along National Highways 39 and 53 even after two years.
