As the world prepares to observe the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9, the Human Rights Initiative (HRI) has issued a strong appeal highlighting the urgent situation in Manipur and calling for justice, peace, and the protection of Indigenous rights.
This year’s theme, “Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights and Shaping Futures,” emphasizes the growing intersection between Indigenous communities and emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). HRI noted the critical importance of ensuring Indigenous Peoples have a voice in shaping the development and application of AI. The organisation also stressed the essential role Indigenous communities play in protecting biodiversity and the environment.
Despite these global reflections, HRI expressed grave concern over the ongoing crisis in Manipur, where Indigenous communities are facing severe challenges due to ongoing ethnic violence and human rights abuses. Thousands have been displaced, lives have been lost, and properties destroyed, further compounding long-standing social, economic, and cultural hardships faced by Indigenous groups in the state.
According to HRI, the escalating violence highlights the urgent need for inclusive dialogue and reconciliation to address the root causes of ethnic tensions in the region. The organisation reaffirmed that Indigenous Peoples have the right to self-determination, cultural preservation, and equal access to resources. As the world celebrates the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities, HRI stressed that the suffering of Indigenous peoples in Manipur must not be overlooked.
The organisation raised concerns about the widespread use of excessive force, torture, and extrajudicial killings, which have led to displacement and trauma. It also noted the continued violation of Indigenous rights, with many communities being denied access to their cultural, economic, and territorial entitlements. HRI emphasized the urgent need for accountability and justice for the victims of human rights violations in Manipur.
In a message of solidarity, HRI reiterated its support for Indigenous communities both in Manipur and across the world. It urged governments, civil society organisations, and individuals to take immediate and meaningful action to stop the violence and uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The organisation called for inclusive dialogue and reconciliation processes to restore peace and address the underlying causes of ethnic strife in the region. Furthermore, HRI urged that the development and use of Artificial Intelligence must be culturally sensitive and ensure tangible benefits for Indigenous communities without undermining their rights.
