AMUCO to commemorate Manipur Integrity Day on August 4

The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has announced that it will observe Manipur Integrity Day on August 4, 2025, by paying tribute at integrity pillar at the eastern side of Mapal Kangjeibung followed by a public meeting at GM Hall to reaffirm the people’s commitment to safeguarding the territorial integrity of Manipur. The event marks the 28th anniversary of the historic rally held on August 4, 1997, which witnessed the participation of over five lakh people from across the state.
In a press release issued on Thursday, AMUCO described the 1997 mass rally as a defining moment in the socio-political history of Manipur and Southeast Asia. The rally, which took place at Mapal Kangjeibung (Pologround), was a response to perceived threats to Manipur’s territorial boundaries. The massive gathering aimed to express the collective will of the people in defending the state’s unity. However, the day also witnessed tragedy when Laishram Romeo, a Class X student of Mukta High School from Moirang Thana Leikai, lost his life during a police crackdown. Several others sustained injuries.
AMUCO stated that the observance of Manipur Integrity Day has since become an annual tradition dedicated to honouring the sacrifices made and promoting peace, territorial unity, and social justice. This year’s rally will commence from Mapal Kangjeibung and culminate at the Manipur Integrity Pillar located near the Manipur State Museum. A commemorative programme will follow at the G.M. Hall from 10:00 AM onwards, with participation expected from delegates representing more than 153 clubs and organisations.
In connection with the observance, AMUCO also recalled the formation of the Organising Committee for Territorial Integrity of Manipur (OCTIM) in the wake of the 1997 rally. The committee, comprising various civil society bodies, had organised several public demonstrations including a major sit-in protest on August 18, 1997, and another at Yairipok Singga Heirok on August 22, 1997. Protesters Nawaz Khan and Ruksana sustained injuries during police action at these events.
Highlighting the importance of the day, AMUCO noted that on August 4, 1998, the then Chief Minister Wahengbam Nipamacha formally recognised the day as Manipur Integrity Day, and since then, it has been observed annually to reaffirm the people’s collective stand against any move that may threaten the territorial integrity of the state.
