Following Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s appeal for the surrender of illegally held weapons and ammunition, authorities have received multiple arms across different districts of the state. Several police stations have reported the voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition.
According to a statement the Zomi and Kuki communities voluntarily handed over 16 weapons and ammunition in Churachandpur district on February 22, 2025. The Governor had earlier warned that strict action would be taken against those who failed to surrender their weapons.
According to a statement, the Assam Rifles, Police, CRPF, State Intelligence Agencies, and State Administration engaged with local Zomi and Kuki community leaders, addressing their security concerns and assuring them of safety. Officials also emphasized the positive impact of de-weaponization in the region. Following these discussions, community leaders brought the first lot of surrendered weapons to Tuibong village in Churachandpur.
The surrendered arms included one M-16 rifle, one 7.62 mm SLR, two AK rifles, three INSAS rifles, two M-79 40mm Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL), one 9mm Carbine Machine Gun, one 51 mm Mortar, three .303 rifles, two single-barrel rifles, 64 gelatine sticks, along with various rounds of ammunition. The surrender took place in the presence of senior officials from the Assam Rifles, CRPF, State Civil Administration, Police, and State Intelligence Agencies.
Earlier in Kakching District, an individual surrendered a .303 rifle with a magazine, 13 rounds of .303 ammunition, four bulletproof vests, five bulletproof plates, and four helmets to SP Kakching. Additionally, security forces recovered several abandoned weapons in the Kakching Wairi area, which included one 5.56 mm INSAS rifle, one 5.6 mm caliber rifle, one 2 Bore rifle, one 12 Bore shotgun, one 9mm pistol, one air pistol, one .303 rifle, four single-barrel 12 Bore rifles, one 12 Bore water cannon, and one hand grenade.
Further ammunition and accessories recovered from the area included 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 92 rounds of 7.62 mm AK-47 ammunition, 40 rounds of 7.62 mm CTN ammunition, 45 rounds of 5.56 mm INSAS ammunition, 13 rounds of 20 KF small INSAS ammunition, 65 rounds of .303 ammunition, and 30 live cartridges for 12 Bore guns. Authorities also retrieved two INSAS magazines, one .303 magazine, one 9mm pistol magazine of Chinese origin, two telescopic sights for .303 rifles, a small bipod, multiple firearm certificates (FCC) for different calibers, two tear smoke shells, 13 Motorola communication sets, nine Motorola charging adapters, one bayonet, 28 bulletproof jackets, 38 bulletproof plates, one helmet, one khukri (traditional knife), one CPU, two black carry bags, and ¹ 2.5 lakh in cash. These items were handed over to Kakching OC (Officer-in-Charge) by security forces.
Additionally, in Kangpokpi District, one tear gas gun was surrendered at the Saparmeina Police Station.
