Imphal, Sept 3:
Drone attacks by Kuki militants, significant casualties and property damage have been reported. Basanta, speaking to the media, recounted a tragic incident on Sunday around 2 p.m. in Koutruk Meetei village, Imphal West district, where Ngangbam Ongbi Surbala, a 31-year-old wife of Ng Ingo from Phayeng Umang Leikai, was killed. Another attack the following day at Sajam Chirang village injured Wantham Sanatombi Devi, 22, and Wantham Sanatomba, 20, damaging their property.
Talking to reporters at the Manipur Press Club, Basanta expressed deep concern over the continuous drone attacks and the severe impact on civilians, including Surbala’s hospitalized daughter. He criticized the state government for its inaction, noting that since May 3, residents in affected areas like Phayeng, Lamsang, and Koutruk have been forced to stay vigilant at night, lacking adequate protection despite the government’s claims of effective administration.
Basanta also highlighted the fear among locals, who have even turned off their lights, reminiscent of earlier times without electricity. He called on the state government to address the villagers’ urgent needs. He also drew the attention of the government about the unresolved case of two local teenagers, Maibam Avinash and Ningthoujam Anthony, who went missing in November 2023, and criticized the lack of government support for their families. The Struggling Women’s Association of Waheng Leikai also condemned the recent bombings at Koutruk and Senjam Chirang.
